Of its time and a comment of current thinking and antagonism
Utterly shite programme mind - complete and total lack of humour, a piss poor bucket of filth
And I am rather inclined to an odd race/religion jape too

It's misconceived as being racist. Yes, the main character was racist but if you look at it, the black guy got the better of him every time, and the wives got on very well.
It was more to show how ridiculous racism is.

No Alfs. It tried to be Alf Garnett but failed and always went for the cheap racist laughs

He was Man United. I also have the box set and there's an episode of him and his mates from the pub going on holiday to Spain and he's pissed in a bar, wearing a Manchester United t shirt and talking to the barman about Bobby Charlton.

And just in case anyone hasn't noticed, the black bloke is now Patrick in Eastenders.

I think you're confusing Eddie (the "honky") with Bill (the "nig-nog").

A comedy which satirised the racist attitude of the white Eastender but unwittingly has become more important as a window into the prelude of the destruction of a community.

I loved this as a kid. I could never understand why it is not shown on TV these days. So I bought the series 1 box set. Watching this confirmed (to me at least) that every time the male leads indulged in racist behaviour they got their comeuppance in some way, thereby giving the message that racists are losers. That's how I always saw it as a kid!
The sexism, however.....deary deary me!
The humour has dated of course, but I loved it at the time. Don't forget that this ran for several series and was one of the most popular comedy series of the 70s. Viewing figures were much higher than anything gets these says, although of course, there wasn't much choice then. Still mostly isn't mind, predominantly either terrestrial TV or terrestrial TV repeats on cable/satellite....
